A flow state is a mental state of deep engagement and focus where one becomes completely absorbed in an activity, to the point where they lose track of time and self-consciousness. Have you ever been so involved in a project, book or task that you didn't hear someone calling your name. Perhaps you were playing a sport and seemed to be  in the right place and time effortlessly. It's a feeling of being "in the zone" and is often associated with peak performance and positive emotions. This state of flow is more common than most people realize and here are some qualities of the experience.

Altered time perception:
  • Time may seem to pass quickly or even slow down, depending on the intensity of the experience.
  • Intrinsically rewarding:
Flow states are often described as deeply satisfying and enjoyable experiences in themselves.
  • High performance:
People in a flow state often perform at their peak, demonstrating a high level of skill and efficiency.
  • Intense focus:
The individual is fully absorbed in the task at hand, with little to no awareness of their surroundings or self.
  • Loss of self-consciousness:
Self-doubt and worries fade away as the person becomes completely immersed in the activity.
  • These are Hypnotic Trance States: Hypnosis can be experienced as some or all of these states.
  • These are Tai Chi and Qi Gong Flow States: Some or all of these sensations may be experienced while practicing.

Examples of flow states:
  • Athletes:
A player in the middle of a game who is completely focused on their performance, oblivious to the crowd or distractions.
  • Artists:
An artist working on a piece of art, lost in their creativity and fully engaged in the process.
  • Gamers:
A gamer who is so immersed in the game that they lose track of time and external factors.
  • Students:
A student studying for an exam, fully focused on the material and the learning process.

How to achieve a flow state:
  • Choose an activity that is challenging but achievable: The challenge should be at a level that matches your skills.
  • Set clear goals: Having a specific objective to work towards can help you focus and stay engaged.
  • Eliminate distractions: Create a quiet and focused environment to minimize interruptions.
  • Find a comfortable pace: Don't rush the process, allow yourself to fully immerse in the activity.
  • Practice mindfulness: Being present in the moment can help you stay focused and avoid dwelling on past or future thoughts.
